Wrestling Upends Oregon State and Portland State

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State wrestling team defeated both Oregon State and Portland State, Sunday, Feb. 10. The Bulldogs began the day in Corvalis, Ore., at Oregon State. There the grapplers defeated the Beavers, 19-15. The 'Dogs then finished the day in Portland, Ore., at Portland State, with a convincing 33-6 victory. Senior Stephen Abas earned his 26th and 27th wins on the season to surpass the Fresno State record of 134 career wins set by Gerry Abas in 1995. Abas had earned his 25th victory at Oregon, Friday, Feb. 8.
At Oregon State, the 'Dogs collected five decisions and one major decision coming off a solid performance by No. 1 ranked Stephen Abas over Michael Delaney in the 125 class. No. 16 Derrick Hayes came away with an 8-6 win over No. 18 Nathan Navaro in the 141 class. Others winning were Zhon Kuraspediani, who was the first victor for the Bulldogs with his decision over Jordan Barich. Next was Jim Medieros, who took the crown in the 157 class, with a decision over Mical Houston. In the 197 class, Marcio Botelho defeated Jason Lovell, while Ralph Lopez won 9-3 over Peter Zamora in the 141 class.
Portland was a bit easier for the 'Dogs as they won seven of the nine weight classes. Again it was Abas, to lead the 'Dogs with his pin versus Casey Kotter. Eddie Gifford also performed well with his 6-5 decision over No. 14 Jeremy Wilson. Ben Martinez, 133 class, tallied 21-7 to earn a major decision over Zac Enoch. Lopez also had a major decision in his 20-4 score versus Stuart Eggertson. Darrick Duran won in the 165 class versus Shawn Keinonen, while Medieros finished with his second victory for the day, in a 7-4 decision against Eric Arbogast.
The Bulldogs, now 11-6 overall, host Cal Poly at home on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 7 p.m. The Mustangs own an overall record of 10-7.
