FRESNO, Calif. - Hawai`i's suffocating defense held Fresno State to a season-low offensive output and helped guide the Rainbow Wahine to a 66-47 victory at the North Gym. The loss is the Bulldogs' 14th in a row to UH, the longest streak Fresno State has against any opponent.
The Rainbow Wahine (18-6, 11-4 WAC) took control of the game early and never let up, leaping to a 10-point advantage at the 10:55 mark. The lead eventually grew to 15 toward the end of the half and expanded to 18 when Chelsea Wagner buried a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer. The three-pointer was UH's fifth in nine attempts in the opening stanza.
Hawai`i was never headed in the second half, eventually going up by as many as 25 at the 10:05 mark. Fresno State (9-16, 4-11 WAC) never got any closer than 15 after the break.
The offensive troubles that plagued the Bulldogs in their 63-50 loss Saturday at Boise State continued against the Wahine. Fresno State shot just 28 percent - its second worst night of the season - and made just 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. Fresno State's best performance came from Aritta Lane, who had 16 points to go along with her 16 rebounds. For the Aiea, Hawaii, native, it marked the seventh double-double of her outstanding freshman season.
"We knew they were going to try to pound us inside and penetrate with their guards," head coach Britt King said. "Tonight, they just hit some shots from outside early on, and that hurt us. But we have San Jose State next, and we need to get ready for them."
UH received a balanced scoring attack, with six players scoring at least seven points. Christa Brossman led the team with a season-high 14 while Kim Willoughby piled up 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs close out the 2001-02 home season by taking on rival San Jose State (14-10, 9-6 WAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the North Gym.
