FRESNO, Calif. - No. 21 Fresno State lost a close match to Oregon on Friday in Eugene, Ore. The Bulldogs won just four matches while the Ducks won six.
Oregon's Shane Webster clenched the team victory with his technical fall over Bakersfield native Britt Mooney in the 174 division, the second to last match of the meet. Webster scored 21 points on Mooney and put the Ducks ahead by eight, making it impossible for Fresno State to make up the difference.
Junior Eddie Gifford earned a major decision over Elias Soto in the last match, but it was too late for the 'Dogs. Fresno State narrowly lost 20-16.
Tight matches characterized the meet, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Fresno State lost all the close calls. The Bulldogs lost three matches by one or two points, including one in overtime.
"If we would have won those three matches we would have won the meet," said Fresno State head coach Dennis DeLiddo.
The Bulldogs wrestle Oregon State and Portland State on Sunday.
