Abas Fares Well in First Round of NCAA Wrestling Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog wrestling team suffered through a gruesome first round as three of four Fresno State wrestlers lost and will move into the consolation brackets.
Senior Stephen Abas was the lone winner, but even the two-time National Champion had a mediocre match. No. 1 seeded Abas beat Jose Leon of Boston by a 2-0 decision, his lowest scoring match this season. Abas will face Michigan State's Chris Williams in the second round which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Junior Ralph Lopez lost to No. 9 seeded Shane Cunanan of West Virginia by an 8-3 decision in the 141 division. Lopez will match up against Chad Caros of Edinboro in the first round of consolations.
Junior Eddie Gifford lost his first round match by two points to unseeded Jake Stork of Maryland in the 184 division. Gifford lost 9-7 and has a first round consolation bye.
Freshman Marcio Botelho was pinned in 1 minute and 47 seconds by No. 2 seeded Jon Trenge of Lehigh in the 197 division. Botelho will wrestle Matt Greenberg of Cornell in the first round of consolations.
