FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head women's basketball coach Britt King announced today she will resign her position effective at the end of her contract, which expires May 31, 2002.
King compiled a 39-76 record (18-44 WAC) in her four years at the helm of the Bulldogs. Her best season came in 1999-00, when Fresno State won 11 games. This year, the Bulldogs finished 9-20 (4-14 WAC) and fell in the first round of the WAC Tournament to Boise State.
"We are very appreciative of what Britt has done for our program and our university," athletics director Scott Johnson said. "She and her team have been solid ambassadors for Fresno State."
Academics was an area of excellence under King's watch. Most recently, three playears earned Dean's List honors in the Fall 2001 semester while the team grade point average was 2.95.
"I'm resigning but I feel the program is better off today than it was when I arrived," King said. "I'm leaving the program with a solid foundation both academically and athletically. I wish the players and the program well."
"Britt had a very positive affect on many facets of this program," Johnson said. "The team had a solid academic standing. The goal was to achieve success both in the classroom and on the court."
"She has recruited strong classes in the past couple of years, but the results have not been there. I have a vision for this program, and right now I feel it's best if we try to accomplish this by going in a different direction."
A nationwide search for King's replacement will begin immediately.
