FRESNO, Calif. - Women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson has announced that freshman Lauren Selmon has decided to transfer to Fresno State from Baylor University. Selmon becomes the second player to join the Bulldogs' roster since Johnson took over April 5.
A 5-foot 11-inch forward from Norman, Okla., Selmon played in 19 games last year for the Bears, averaging 5.6 minutes, 1.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Baylor was ranked in the top 10 for most of the season and ended the 2001-02 campaign by reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
"Lauren is a big-time player who is a huge addition to our program," Johnson said. "We are very excited about the fact that her first year as a Bulldog will be the first year we play in the Save Mart Center. I see her as being a cornerstone of our program for years to come."
Because of NCAA transfer rules, Selmon will not be eligible to play for Fresno State until the 2003-04 season. She may, however, participate in all team practices and functions until then. Selmon will not lose a year of eligibility due to the transfer.
Selmon was a standout at Norman High School from 1998-01. She led the Tigers to four conference championships and to the state semifinals as a sophomore and junior. In her final year at NHS, the forward racked up 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals per game. She was named first-team All-Mid-State Conference three times and all-state by the Daily Oklahoman twice.
Selmon was also a star in AAU basketball for the Oklahoma Air Sooners, helping lead them to national championships in 1995, '97 and '99. She also played for the Oklahoma Pride in 2000 and was named an AAU All-American.
Joining Selmon among newcomers is Chanie Sutherland, a transfer from Midland (Texas) College who signed to play for Fresno State on April 30. Sutherland is a 5-foot 8-inch guard who will be eligible to play next season.
