FRESNO, Calif. - After losing its last two in a row, Fresno State has its only bye of the 2003 season this week. The Bulldogs are currently 3-4 (1-1 WAC) and in the middle of the conference race through two league games. Next up for Fresno State is the homecoming game against Rice on Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. It is the team's first contest at Bulldog Stadium in nearly a month.
Last week, the Bulldogs' frustrations at Hawaii continued, as Fresno State fell to the Warriors 55-28 on Saturday night. The second quarter proved to be the difference in the game, with UH turning a 14-10 deficit into a 38-14 lead at the half. Paul Pinegar threw for 242 yards and tied his career high with three touchdowns, but Hawaii piled up 549 yards in total offense, 404 of which came through the air. The loss snapped the Bulldogs' five-game WAC winning streak and dropped the them to 1-11 on the island since 1967.
Fresno State leads Rice 4-0 in a series that has been defined by where the games have been played. Both of the Bulldogs' victories over the Owls in Houston have come down to the last play, including last year, when Fresno State needed a missed 43-yard field goal as time expired to walk away with a 31-28 victory. The Bulldogs' two victories in Fresno have been much less stressful, however. Fresno State has handed Rice two losses by a combined 57 points.
