Women's Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision To Rice

FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State missed out on a chance to improve its WAC Tournament seeding on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to Rice in the final regular season match in front of 3,358 fans at Bulldog Stadium.
The Bulldogs, who had already qualified for the conference postseason tourney with a win over Tulsa on Thursday, had an opportunity to clinch the No. 3 seed with a victory over the Owls. However, Rice held Fresno State to just nine shots and played tremendous defense to earn the No. 3 seed.
Fresno State was bidding to finish the season unbeaten at home, something it had never accomplished. The Bulldogs were 4-0-1 entering Sunday's contest versus Rice.
Rice took a 2-0 lead into halftime, courtesy of two scores by Callye Dannheim. The Owls reserve scored her first goal of the match at 38:43 when she took a cross from Laura Barber and blasted a shot past Fresno State keeper Jeannette Paine. Dannheim struck again just six minutes later when she drew Paine out of the box and fired the ball into an unguarded goal.
Rice, which was outshot by Fresno State 9-8 for the match, held a 4-2 lead in that department at the halfway point.
The Owl's Becky MacAllister gave Rice a 3-0 lead at 49:57 when she slipped past the Bulldog defense and converted on a one-on-one opportunity.
Fresno State's only score of the match came in the 60th minute, when sophomore Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) dribbled past a group of defenders and fired an off-balance shot into the corner of the net.
Sophomore Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) led the 'Dogs with three shots on the day, while Lewis had two.
Rice's Marisa Galvan tacked on a late insurance goal for the Owls, who were led by Dannheim's four shots.
Rice netminder Lauren Shockley made five saves in the victory, while Paine registered two. Prior to kickoff, the Bulldogs honored the careers of its three seniors- Kristyn Kellogg, Katy Klawitter and Erin Sayegusa.
