GRAPPLERS GO ON THE ROAD
The Bulldogs will take on the Cal Poly Mustangs in a Valentines Day face-off. The natch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. Coming off two home wins Fresno State hopes to hand Cal poly another loss and extend their 8-4 dual record. The Mustangs come off a raod loss to Boise State, 31-2.
BULLDOGS PULL OUT TWO AT HOME
After a dominating match against Menlo, 41-3, Fresno State battled Oregon to come out on top, 19-12. In front of a season high attendance, 475 people watched the Bulldogs extend their dual record to 10-4. Fresno State would pin Menlo three times and win six other matches before the Oaks managed to score. Sophomore Sal Gonzales would start the Menlo match at 125 and score the first pin at 5:08 against Ricky Aguirre. Junior Casey Olson won by technical fall, 17-1, against Menlo's Matt Frank in the 141 division. Junior Jim Medeiros would score the next pin, at 157, stopping the clock a 1:37 left in the first period, against Sean Van Der Wende of Menlo. The second technical fall was in favor of senior Eddie Gifford, 19-2, over Howard Favlet of Menlo in the 174 division. The last pin of the night came from Marcio Botleho, at 197, with 1:02 left in the first period, against Menlo's Terrance Carter. The next would be back and forth. Oregon would took the 125 division. But, junior Ben Martinez would not lay down, at 133, winning by the biggest score of the night, 17-8, against Jacob Boyles of Oregon. It wasn't until the 184 division that the Bulldogs took control of the score. Freshman Greg Gifford won by decision,11-9, against Oregon's Tony Rolen. Sophomore Clint Walbeck won his match in the heavywieght division by decision, 7-5, over Neil Phillips. The Bulldogs finished 19-12.
TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS
Fresno State won the All-California Tournament for the second straight year with 101 team points. Five Bulldogs walked away with first place standings. Clint Walbeck won for most pins with a count of three. Senior Zhon Kuraspediani went 5-5 at 149. He had one pin on the day won the championship a 9-7 decision win over Cal State Fullerton's Brett Gordon. Junior Jim Medeiros won the 157 division. His second major decision win of the day, 12-4, made him tournament champ over Matt Gentry of Stanford. Another senior, Ben Baca placed first at 165. Baca beat San Francisco State's Josh MacDonald 12-6 for the title. Eddie Gifford won three straight matches only to lose by decision, 3-1, in the final round of the 174 division. Gifford's fifth loss goes to previous opponent Cal State Fullerton's Chris Carlino. These two have faced off three times this year, Carlino leading 2-1. Freshman Jatinder Singh placed 3rd at 184. Sophomore Marcio Botelho took the 197 division. A pin in the first round pushed him into a default win and a final decision win, 9-7, over Drew Dunbar of San Francisco State. Clint Walbeck managed to pin all three opponents of the day. The last pin over David Galant of Cal Poly, Walbeck's former school, gave him the title. Cal State Bakersfield took second place with 75 points and Cal State Fullerton third with 68 points. San Francisco State, Stanford, Cal Poly, Menlo and UC Davis all participated.
