Wrestling Goes 1-2 in Day of Duals

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State came in like a lion and went out like a lamb. The Bulldogs pounded Columbia, but lost to UC Davis and 20th ranked Northern Iowa at their home opener on Saturday.
Fresno State allowed only one match loss in its 37-3 thumping of Columbia. From Christian Bowerman in the 133 division up to Clint Walbeck in the heavyweight division, the Bulldogs didn't let up.
Redshirt freshman Anthony Rubalcava, junior Marcio Botelho, who made his 2003-04 season debut, and Walbeck all got pins in their respective divisions.
But the Bulldogs failed to respond to the tough challenges UC Davis and Northern Iowa put up in the next two meets. Fresno State lost by an embarrassing 25-12 to both schools, only one of which was ranked in the top 25.
Fresno State won four and lost six to UC Davis, but it was the bonus points that killed the Bulldogs. The Aggies scored seven extra points on two pins and a major decision, creating quite a spread in the score. Fresno State won its four matches by decision, therefore racking up no extra points to fill the gap.
UC Davis jumped to a 12-0 lead by winning its first three matches. Casey Olson provided the first Bulldog win with a 2-1 decision over Chris Brines. Fresno State lost two more before Rubalcava beat UC Davis' Daniel Price 10-6.
Greg Gifford got another win for the 'Dogs by decision over Brandon Bear and after losing one more match to the Aggies, Walbeck closed the meet with a 4-1 win over Michael Clarkston.
It was the same story of the detrimental bonus points in Fresno State's loss to No. 20 Northern Iowa in their last meet of the day. The Panthers scored seven extra points on a pin, technical fall and two major decisions to secure their win.
Fresno State's first win came from senior Ben Martinez in the 141 division, followed by another from Olson, who went 3-0 for the day. The only other Bulldogs to accomplish this were Gifford and Walbeck.
Fresno State also hosted meets pitting UC Davis against Northern Iowa and Columbia against UC Davis. Northern Iowa beat UC Davis 24-13 and Columbia beat UC Davis 21-20.
Up next for the Bulldogs are the meets to be held in the Save Mart Center where attendance is expected to reach 10,000. Fresno State wrestles San Francisco State at 5:30 p.m. and second ranked Iowa State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
