Volleyball Records Sweep Over San Jose State

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team utilized its defense to the fullest as the Bulldogs dominated San Jose State in a 30-28, 30-17 and 30-22 victory at home in the North Gym.
Freshman outside hitter Christianna Reneau led the way as she tallied a match-high 20 kills and picked up 12 digs while hitting .366 (20-5-41).
Senior middle blocker Tiffany Bishop chipped in 12 kills and had three digs to go along with a match-best six blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Tuli Peters added 10 kills and posted a team-high 18 digs for the Bulldogs.
While five Bulldogs posted double-figure dig performances, Fresno State hit .230 while winning the battle in digging (78-66) and blocking (12-5) over the Spartans, who hit .128 in the match.
San Jose State (9-6, 0-2 WAC) had no one in double-digit kills as Jennifer Senftleben was the Spartans top kill leader (9). Kristina Conrad added eight kills and posted 11 digs while Carrie Nash tallied seven kills to go along with 12 digs. Jessie Shull collected a match-best 20 digs.
While there were a total of 20 ties, 15 of which came in the first game alone, Fresno State controlled the tempo of the match as it also only allowed 12 lead changes.
In game one, the Bulldogs hit .200 while San Jose State hit. 286. However, it was the 'Dogs digging and blocking that gave them the win. Reneau was a one-woman wrecking crew for Fresno State after picking up 13 kills and hitting .385 (13-3-26). Peters and Reneau also led the Bulldogs with eight digs a piece.
In game two, Fresno State hit .282 while SJSU hit .020. Peters picked up four kills while freshman outside hitter Mounia Nihipali came into the match and responded with six digs to go along with three kills and two assists.
In the final set, Fresno State hit .200 while the Spartans hit .080. Peters led the 'Dogs with five kills, seven digs and three blocks.
"I thought we played well in all areas of the game," head coach Lindy Vivas said. "We served tough, we were able to run an effective middle attack and we just had good overall individual performances.
"I thought this match would be tougher emotionally because of how we expended ourselves against Hawai'i," Vivas added. "We stayed focused and came ready to play despite a disappointing loss. The team did a good job tonight."
Fresno State (9-6, 2-2 WAC) will take a quick step out of conference action on Tue., Oct. 5, when the Bulldogs travel to CS Northridge for a 7:00 p.m. match at The Matadome. The 'Dogs return to WAC action at home on Sat., Oct. 9, with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Nevada.
