Fresno Calif. - Fresno State wrestling has announced the signing of Paul Ruiz to join the Bulldogs for the 2005-06 season.
Ruiz is a standout athlete at Firebaugh High School where he is a two-sport athlete in football and wrestling. He is a two-way starter for the football team at running back and at safety, and was named all-league last year for both offense and defense.
Wrestling as a lightweight at 103, Ruiz has put together a solid record at Firebaugh, where he has been a first-team all-league selection for the past three years. As a sophomore Ruiz placed seventh in the state, and posted a record of 53-2. His success continued last year where he went undefeated for the year at 39-0.
This season Ruiz has moved up two classes to 119 to prepare for his collegiate career, where he will most likely wrestle in the 125-pound weight class, according to head coach Dennis DeLiddo. Ruiz is the only recruit to sign during the early signing period, which is traditionally a light recruiting period for wrestling.
