Fresno, Calif. - Frenso State started the season with a tough loss against Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night, losing their dual opener to Cal State Fullerton 24-15. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 0-1 on the season.
The evening's competition started out with the Bulldogs and the Titans trading wins, as Jeff Silva won a 2-1 decision over Dan Cadwallader, and Jim Medeiros of Fresno State hung on for a 6-4 victory in overtime over Angelo Lago in the 157-pound match.
The dual would continue in this manner with the teams trading decisions until Fullerton's 197-pound wrestler Landon Seefeldt pinned freshman Deveraux Solis of the Bulldogs, who was wrestling up three divisions due to 2002 All-American Marcio Botelho succombing to a sudden onset of the chicken pox. Clint Walbeck brought the match back within striking distance however with a pin over Daniel Ott of the Titans in the heavyweight matchup.
After trading two more decisions, the Titans held a slim lead of 18-15 heading into the 141 matchup, but Juan Mora pinned Garrett Spooner to end the Bulldogs chances. This was Spooner's first match of the season.
The team will take one day off, and then competes in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
