Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State Wrestling squad entered their second scored tournament of 2005 looking to make an impression, and they certainly acheived that goal by placing 3rd out of 19 teams at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday.
The Bulldogs scored 96 points, putting them just behind runner-up Arizona State with 103. The Oklahoma State Cowboys ran away with the team title, scoring 163.5 points on their way to the tournament championship.
Consistency was the key for the Bulldogs. The team had seven wrestlers make it into the top five in their individual weight classes, including two third place finishes from No. 17 Jim Medeiros at 157 pounds, who has been ranked all season, and an impressive showing by true freshman Chris Gifford, who finished third in the 174-pound division in only his fourth collegiate competiton.
Among Fresno State's other ranked wrestlers, No. 12 Clint Walbeck finished fourth among the heavywieghts, and No. 4 Marcio Botelho struggled against a tough draw to finish fifth at 197.
The squad also gained points from the fifth-place finishes by Christian Bowerman, Joe Mavins and Jatinder Singh, who placed at 125, 133, and 184 respectively. Extra points were awarded to wrestlers that placed first through sixth.
Fresno State makes its home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 22 in the North Gym against defending champion Oklahoma State. The match begins at 7 p.m.
