FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State rebounded strong after dropping the doubles point to post a 6-1 victory over BYU on Thursday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The 39th-ranked Bulldogs (3-4) started slowly, losing two of the three doubles matches to fall behind 1-0 to the Cougars (1-6). The lone team to post a victory was Sergiu Modoc and Stefan Suta at No. 2. They defeated Dominik Kaufhold and Ivan Kokurin 9-8 (2).
In singles, Fresno State jumped out on top of BYU fast, posting straight-set victories at Nos. 2, 3 and 6. At No. 2, Alex Krohn won 6-1, 6-2 and continued his impressive play as of late.
Three-set winners were Greg Shearer, Jakub Cech and newcomer Charles Irie. Shearer took out No. 82 Erik Nyman 5-7, 6-4, (10-5), marking the third time this year the junior has defeated a ranked player.
The win was also noteworthy for Irie, who was playing in his first dual match since joining the team this semester.
