Chris Berrian Advances To Saturday's NCAA West Regional Finals

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.- Junior Chris Berrian (Atwater, Calif.) placed eighth in the preliminaries of the 200-meter run on Friday afternoon on the opening day of action at NCAA West Regionals, awarding him a berth in Saturday's event final.
Berrian ran a 21.37 to finish eighth out of 10 participants. He was the only Bulldog athlete to advance on Friday however, as Fresno State's nine other entrants failed to qualify for Saturday's competition.
Also on the men's side, senior Joe Vasquez (Selma, Calif.) recorded a throw of 180-10 (55.13m) in the hammer and freshman Ryan Moore (Visalia, Calif.) ran a 53.72 in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles. Vasquez placed 18th, while Moore took 19th overall.
Four pole vaulters from the women's squad were in action on Friday. Junior Lexine Lesser (Hanford, Calif.) led the contingent with a personal-best mark of 12-10 (3.91m) to take 10th overall. Freshman Samantha Modeste (Roseville, Calif.) also established a personal-best with a 12-4 (3.76m) to tie for 14th place, along with teammate Annie Malaythong (Merced, Calif.). Junior Michelle Lennox (Pearl River, N.Y.) reached 11-10 (3.61m).
Freshman Zinzi Evans (Oakland, Calif.) was making her first career NCAA Regional appearance and checked in with a 2:10.91 in the prelims of the 800-meter run, placing her 14th.
Throwers Katie Richardson (Yreka, Calif.) and La' Sha Hill (Oakland, Calif.) competed in the discus. Richardson took 14th at 155-10 (47.51m), while Hill was 15th at 155-07 (47.42m).
Overall, a total of 50 athletes punched their tickets for Austin, Texas, and a trip to the NCAA Championships during the first day of competition. The top five finishers from 10 different events on Friday qualified for the NCAA Championship meet, which will take place from June 9-12.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Regionals finish up on Saturday, with field events starting at 8:30 a.m. and track events beginning at 3:30 p.m.
