The 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America Softball University Division Team was announced this morning and three-time All-American and junior pitcher/utility Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) has added another All-America title to her resume.
Southern was named Third Team Academic All-American by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). This marks the 16th time that a Bulldog softball player has been singled out, 14 times under head coach Margie Wright, and 34th overall for the university since 1985.
As the eighth Bulldog to become a three-time All-American on the softball field last week, she is majoring in liberal studies and boasts a 3.46 cumulative GPA .
Remarkably, Southern is the fifth softball player to garner All-America honors both on and off the field in the same year (nine times overall) and the 14th Fresno State student-athlete overall to accomplish that very same extraordinary feat.
The 5-10 right-hander, who also has served as the designated player and patrolled the outfield this past year, is the seventh Bulldog pitcher to garner Academic All-America honors as it marks the eighth time overall for a Fresno State hurler.
On the field accomplishments in 2004 include a perfect game, tying the school's single-game strikeout record twice, posting a 30-win season for the second time in a career and becoming the 23rd NCAA Division I pitcher to tally 1,000 or more career strikeouts.
Southern, who became the conference's first pitcher to be a three-time WAC Pitcher of the Year honoree, recorded her 90th career win against No. 12 Auburn while posting season-high streaks of 54.0 innings without a walk, 56.2 innings without an earned run and 31.1 scoreless innings.
As the national leader in ERA for the second time of her career, she also posted a season-best 12-game win streak and notched her 60th career shutout while throwing six one-hitter and seven two-hitters in 2004.
Posting a career year at the plate with 19 multiple hit and nine multiple RBI games, Southern also was a Top 10 Finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. The 14-time WAC Pitcher of the Week and two-time WAC Player of the Week honoree also was named National Player of the Week for the third time of her career in 2004.
In 2004, Southern batted .335 (70-209) with 29 runs, 14 doubles, nine home runs, 34 RBI, 12 sacrifices, 10 walks, 11 strikeouts, 1-1 in stolen bases, 111 total bases and a .531 slugging percentage. While recording her first 100 total base season, she also had a pair of multi home run performances and tied Fresno State's and the WAC's single-game record for runs (4). In the circle, she went 30-7 with 20 shutouts, three saves and 299 strikeouts for a 0.54 ERA in 259.0 innings as opponents hit .144 against.
