FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team opened the 2005 dual match season with a 6-1 victory over Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The match was the first for the Bulldogs (1-0) under the direction of new head coach Jay Udwadia, who took over the team in October. Udwadia formerly served as the head coach at Drake University, which he led to a 17-6 record and a Missouri Valley Conference title last year.
Cal Poly (0-2) dropped its 10th match in a row to the Bulldogs, who have won their last three season openers.
Fresno State started by winning two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead heading into singles. The Bulldogs posted wins at No. 1 with Sergiu Modoc and Jakub Cech and at No. 3 with Sam Gibbs and Andy Sinn.
In singles, five Fresno State players won in straight sets. Sam Tadevosian won his dual match debut, dropping three games in an easy victory at No. 6. Sergiu Modoc, playing his first match ever at No. 1 singles, cruised past Matt Baca 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 2, Jakub Cech didn't monkey around with Davey Jones, defeating the Cal Poly senior 6-3, 7-5.
The Bulldogs return to the court later Sunday for a 2 p.m. match against UC Santa Cruz.
