Fresno, Caliif. - Led by .364 hitting in game two, Fresno State took a close victory in that game but was quickly defeated in the other three for a 21-30, 31-29, 17-30, 15-30 loss to San Jose State Thursday night. Angela Wiggins had 19 kills for the Bulldogs and Alison Pitton had 18, but San Jose State hit .316 over the match and was led by Jennifer Senftleben who had 26 kills to get the win.
San Jose State came out hot in the first game, hitting .410 against the Bulldogs. While the Bulldogs were able to hang close in the early going, taking a lead at 14-12 after an Angela Wiggins kill, the San Jose State attack was too much as the Spartans took a 22-18 lead, and then won eight of the next eleven points to get the game one lead.
Fresno State improved on .282 hitting in the first game though, relying on outside hitters Angela Wiggins and Alison Pitton. The Bulldogs hit .364 in game three, and moved out to an early 13-8 lead aver two kills from Angela Wiggins. San Jose State pulled back to the Bulldogs though, and tied the game first at 15 and then at 19 all. The Spartans even pulled ahead in the second game at 27-25 after a kill from Nia Freeman, but Fresno State regained the lead to 30-29 and a kill by Angela Wiggins game the Bulldogs the win in game 2.
The remainder of the match belonged to the Spartans however, as San Jose State slowed the torrid early hitting of the Bulldogs while maintaining their own high accuracy on the way to a couple of easy wins in the third and fourth games. Already second in the WAC in kills per game, Jennifer Sentleben added 26 in the match, and outside hitter Niki Clement ended up hitting .526 (12/2/19) over the match.
Fresno State returns to action on Saturday night against No. 10 Hawai'i, who defeated Nevada in three games on Thurdsday, extending their WAC winning streak to 101 matches. The Bulldogs look to take their shot against the Rainbow Wahine at 7 p.m. Saturday in the North Gym.
