FRESNO, Calif.- Amy Parrish scored a game-high 20 points to lead five players in double-figures as Fresno State ambushed Texas Southern 91-62 on Monday night in the home opener at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (2-0), which defeated UC Irvine 93-84 three nights ago in the season opener, showcased a balanced offense while shooting 47.4-percent overall from the field. The Bulldogs have now scored at least 90 points in back-to-back games for the first time since 1990.
Parrish also added nine rebounds, falling just one board shy of a double-double for the second straight game. Chantella Perera added 19 points on 8-12 shooting and Toni Atherley established a career-high with 14 points. Andrea Roberson added 11 points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes of playing time.
"I think you can start to see different players becoming more familiar with their roles," said head coach Adrian Wiggins. "Obviously we played at a high level on offense tonight and did a good job sharing the ball and knocking down open shots. Everyone was involved in the victory and this builds confidence heading into our game on Wednesday."
The Bulldogs forced 31 turnovers, outrebounded the Tigers 50-31 and held a 28-13 edge in assists.
Fresno State- which never trailed- overwhelmed Texas Southern (0-2) from the start, racing out to a 9-1 start. Six minutes into the game, the Bulldogs had stretched their lead to double-digits as a three-pointer from Faith Probst made it 17-5.
A jumper from Parrish at the 8:28 mark of the first period gave Fresno State its first 20-point lead at 31-11. Fresno State's largest lead of the first half was 28, as a lay-up from Parrish made it 42-14 with 4:57 remaining. The `Dogs took a 48-25 lead into the locker room, with Parrish scoring 14 through the first 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 12-4 scoring run, going up 60-29 with 17:37 following a lay-up from Perera.
Fresno State was never threatened thereafter, coasting to its biggest lead of the night with 4:50 remaining in the contest after a free throw from Roberson made it 82-49.
The Bulldogs will play their next three games on the road, the first of which takes place Wednesday against No. 15 Stanford (1-1). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.
