Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State finished their tournament season on Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions, where the Bulldogs matched up with most of the top teams in the West. The Bulldogs were led by junior Greg Gifford, who was the only Bulldog to place in the tournament, finishing sixth at 184 pounds.
The Bulldogs also had two wrestlers finish just one round shy of the placement matches. 141-pound Garrett Spooner started out the tournament with two straight wins, before being knocked out of the winners bracket, and picked up a major decision before bowing out of the tournament. Sean Carlson also joined Spooner in that accomplishment, wrestling at 125-pounds and making a long run through the wrestlebacks, winning three straight matches before losing just one match out of the placement.
Gifford had the top run out of the Bulldog grapplers on the day. Gifford opened the day with three wins, including a 17-8 major decision over Logan Lowe from Princeton. Gifford was knocked out of the winners bracket by eventual champion Mike Tamillow of Northwestern, and proceeded to the placement round where he finished in sixth place.
Two-time national champion Oklahoma State took the top spot in the team standings, followed by Central Michigan and Northwestern. The Bulldogs are on a break until the second week of January, when they will host two three-way duals, beginning on January 11 and continuing on January 13, when the team faces San Francisco State and Illinois in the Save Mart Center.
