SAN FRANCISCO- Mirenda Swearengin set the tone for Fresno State's best shooting performance of the season, connecting on 10-11 attempts from the field for a game-high 22 points in Fresno State's 73-53 victory over San Francisco on Tuesday night.
Swearengin, playing in just her second game of the year, continues to show little rust in her return to the court. In addition to her 22 points, she pulled down six boards, dished out four assists and came up with five steals.
Amy Parrish also reached double-figures before fouling out late in the contest, adding 12 points to go along with four rebounds. Chantella Perera added nine points while Andrea Roberson scored eight off the bench.
Fresno State (7-3), which shot 53.7-percent overall, put the game out of reach by halftime with a 44-21 lead at intermission. The `Dogs shot a blistering 63.3-percent in the opening 20 minutes and were on track to duplicate that performance in the second half. However, the pace was slowed down as the Bulldogs were whistled for 18 second-half fouls.
It wasn't a factor though against San Francisco (4-7), which shot a dismal 32.6-percent while being outrebounded 35-27. The Dons committed 21 turnovers and would have been dominated even more if not for a 22-24 clip from the free throw line.
The teams traded baskets in the early going. A three-pointer from Perera gave Fresno State a 15-14 lead with 12:48 left in the first quarter and the Bulldogs continued to pad their lead with a 14-0 scoring run that spanned four minutes.
A bucket from Perera at the 4:19 mark extended the Bulldog's lead to 37-16 and Fresno State owned a 44-21 halftime edge.
Two free throws from Perera gave Fresno State its largest lead of the game at 53-27 with 14:45 remaining. However, San Francisco managed to creep as close as 56-42 with just over eight minutes left, courtesy of a second-half free-throw barrage that was led by reserve Danae Wellander's 17 points (7-8 from the line).
Fresno State plays its next game on Dec. 29 when it travels to Texas Tech (4-5).
