Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State's wrestling squad finished their weekend of action, ending competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which ran through today. The Bulldogs only wrestled in seven weight classes, and finished 38th in the competition. Fresno State had two wrestlers make the Round of 16, including junior transfer Charles Jones who made the quarterfinals, the best finish for the Bulldogs in the tournament.
Jones, a newcomer from Oklahoma, had a good showing in his first action as a Bulldog. Wrestling at 157 pounds, Jones won his first two matches before dropping a close 4-1 decision to Alex Tirapelle, currently the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 157 pounds in the quarterfinals.
Junior Greg Gifford also won his first two matches for the Bulldogs, making the round of 16. Gifford started the tournament with an 8-2 decision over Duke's Dan Tulley, and advanced again after a 12-6 win over Nate Buys of Augustana. Other wrestlers in action for the Bulldogs included Andrew Meredith, Sean Carlson, Miguel Rodriguez, Lucas Anderson and Garrett Spooner.
Fresno State begins dual season next weekend, when the Bulldogs host fellow Western Region member Wyoming in the North Gym. The Bulldogs defeated the Cowboys last season in Laramie 35-11, and will look to continue their streak on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m.
