Women's Basketball Cruises Past UTEP, 65-47

FRESNO, Calif.- Amy Parrish scored a game-high 22 points for the third game in row, leading Fresno State to a 65-47 victory over UTEP on Thursday night at the Save Mart Center.For Fresno State (14-7, 6-6 WAC), the victory was the team's first home win in WAC play and first under interim head coach Adrian Wiggins, who was making his debut after it was announced Wednesday that head coach Stacy Johnson-Klein was placed on paid administrative leave.
UTEP falls to 9-13 overall and 4-8 in the WAC. Fresno State, now 5-5 at home, has now won two straight and three of four overall.
Parrish, who has scored at least 20 points in five of the last six games, and Jasmine Plummer grabbed eight rebounds. Plummer scored just four points, but dished out four assists and came up with eight of Fresno State's 17 steals. Tierre Wilson added 12 points on 5-7 shooting, marking the second straight game she has scored in double-figures.
UTEP, which shot just 37.5-percent compared to Fresno State's 48.1-percent mark, was led by Jonna Launiainen and Izabela Piekarska- both with 10. Fresno State forced 26 turnovers but also committed 20. UTEP held a slim edge on the boards at 32-30.
The Miners jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Fresno State got on the board with a three-pointer from Parrish. A put-back by Aritta Lane later knotted the game at 19-19 with 7:48 on the clock and Fresno State would close out the first half on a 14-4 scoring run. The Bulldogs stretched their first-half lead to 12 before Angie McGee's two free throws cut Fresno State's halftime lead to 33-23.
The second half belonged to Fresno State as well, with the Bulldogs maintaining a double-digit lead over the final 20 minutes. Fresno State outscored UTEP 32-24 in the second half, with Parrish continuing to get tough points underneath while Wilson and Chantella Perera knocked down critical three-pointers.
Fresno State will close out its homestand on Saturday, Feb. 12 against Boise State at 4 p.m.
