FRESNO, Calif.- The opening day of the Cal-Nevada Championships came to a close late Friday evening at Warmerdam Field, with all preliminary events completed despite varied weather conditions throughout the day.Competitors and spectators were treated to a sun-splashed morning before rain and stormy weather struck in the afternoon and threatened the completion of the meet. However, the weather subsided and all events were completed leading up to Saturday's final round.
Roy Phelps and Russell Weaver reached 15-3.75 (4.67m) in the pole vault, good enough to advance to Saturday's finals along with nine other entrants including fellow Bulldogs Leif McMurry and Adam Andresen (both at 15-0/4.57m). That would turn out to be Fresno State's only first-place finish in the field events. Lexine Lesser (second place at 11-8/3.56m), Annie Malaythong and Samantha Modeste reached the pole vault finals for the women.
Katie Richardson threw a season-high 156-5 (47.67m) to finish fourth and reach the finals of the discus, while Mallory Webb recorded a throw of 145-11 (44.47m) to take third in the javelin and advance. Dave Endler, already an NCAA Regional qualifier in the discus, placed third at 161-3 (49.14m) and locked up a spot in Saturday's finals.
Chris Berrian, an NCAA Regional qualifier in the 200-meters, had the best time in the 100- and 200-meter events on Friday at 10.64 and 21.56, respectively. Christina Lopez, one of the top sprinters on the women's side, also advanced to the finals of the 100- and 200-meter runs.
Other event winners on Friday included: Zinzi Evans (800-meters at 2:11.94), Ryan Moore (400-meter hurdles at 52.30) and Andrea Buckner (3000-meter steeplechase at 10:46.76). Buckner has already qualified for NCAA Regionals.
