Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State announced today that Kevin Lake has been hired as an assistant coach for the wrestling program. He will join new head coach Shawn Charles in his first year with the Bulldogs.
Lake spent the previous year as the assistant coach for South Dakota State University, where he helped lead the Jacks to a 10-8 dual record along with a first place finish in the American division at the Virginia Duals.
Prior to his employment at South Dakota State, Lake served as assistant coach at Princeton University. During his time at Princeton, the Tigers had two All-Americans and four All-Ivy League selections. Lake also has experience as a head coach, leading the wrestling team at the Division III MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois.
"I believe that Kevin is going to bring a lot of things to the table," said head coach Shawn Charles. "He will help make our program more efficient, and his experience in balancing athletics with academics at a program as respected as Princeton's will only help us to continue to grow in that area. He also has a wealth of coaching experience that will benefit me and the athletes as we continue to expand the fine tradition wrestling has here at Fresno State."
A wrestler during his four years at Manchester College, Lake was a part of a squad that won four Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and placed in the NCAA Division III top 10 three times, including the 1997-98 season when Lake served as team captain and the team finished a school-best sixth at the NCAA Championships.
"I'm very excited about becoming a Bulldog," said Lake. "Being in California is an exciting change for me. I'm especially looking forward to working with Coach Charles, since I have such confidence in his abilities and desire to lead these great young men. It's an exciting time for Fresno State wrestling as we work into what is a new era. Our goals for the program and as a staff are very high, and we see this as a great opportunity. We plan on working very hard to make all of those goals a reality."
Lake earned his Bachelor's degree while at Manchester College, and finished work on his Master's Degree in Sport Administration from Central Michigan in 2004. He joins Charles in taking over the program from Dennis DeLiddo, who retired this past season after 24 years as the head coach.
