Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State put forth a strong effort, winning four of nine contested matches against Stanford, but a forfeit and bonus point wins from the Cardinal led to a 26-12 defeat. Garrett Spooner just missed a major decision in the opening match of the night, and Greg Gifford, Cody Parker and Sean Carlson also picked up wins for the Bulldogs, who end the dual season Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the North Gym.
The Bulldogs put together their most complete lineup since the season opener against Wyoming, wrestling nine matches against Stanford, only forfeiting 174 pounds in what has been a constant struggle with injuries in 2005-06.
Taking quick advantage of the lineup, Garrett Spooner began the night with a Fresno State win. The senior turned a takedown into a near-fall, starting the match with a 5-0 lead, which stayed even through the second period as Spooner and Juston Johnson moved into the final period as Spooner held a 7-2 lead. Spooner held Johnson down through nearly the entire third period, tilting him for a two-point near fall, but just missed the bonus point victory when Johnson slipped away for an escape with one second remaining in the match.
Fresno State was unable to maintain the momentum, as the Cardinal used the strength of their lineup through the middle weights to get two major decisions and a technical fall in the next three matches before the Fresno State forfeit at 174 pounds to take a 19-3 lead. Greg Gifford ended the streak by winning a 3-2 decision over Brennan Corbett at 184 pounds keyed by a takedown in the second period. Miguel Rodriguez again nearly found his first dual match win, keeping a tie with Larry Ozowara through the second period but finishing behind 10-7.
Fresno State won two of the remaining three matches, with Cory Borges falling to No. 15 Tanner Gardner 13-4, but Cody Parker picking up an 8-3 win and Sean Carlson closing out the night with a Fresno State win, picking up another seven-point decision at 9-2.
The Bulldogs have one more dual match this Saturday at 7 p.m. against UC Davis before moving into tournament competition. First, the Bulldogs travel to Wyoming on March 4 to participate in the NCAA Western Regional to gain entry into NCAA Tournament, being held from March 16-18 in Oklahoma City.
