EUGENE, Ore. - The 63rd-ranked Fresno State men's tennis team won its first road match of the dual match season Sunday in Eugene, Ore. The Bulldogs bested the Ducks in a come from behind 4-3 victory. Junior Jakub Cech, ranked No. 66 in the NCAA, clinched the win for the Bulldogs by beating Thomas Bieri of Oregon in three sets in the deciding match. Fresno State is now 7-3 on the year.
Fresno State trailed 3-1 early after losing the doubles point and two of the first three completed singles matches. But with three matches still in progress, Cech, junior Charles Irie and freshman Jordi Ballester all won in three sets to give the Bulldogs a narrow victory. The win also gave the Bulldogs their first victory over a PAC-10 opponent.
Cech, who beat No. 19 Alex Slovic of Washington Saturday, won the first set, dropped the second and prevailed in 7-0 in the tiebreaker of the third set. Ballester also won in the third set tiebreaker of his match against Fernando Freitas.
Cech and sophomore Sam Tadevosian won at No. 2 doubles 8-6 over Oregon's Bieri/Freitas. Freshman Rudolf Siwy made quick work of Aaron Spencer, winning in straight sets.
The Bulldogs take a break from the dual match season this week when they head to San Diego for the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament.
