Bulldogs Remain Unbeaten, Beat Broncos 5-2

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team remained undefeated on the 2006 dual match season with a 5-2 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos, Sunday at the Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improved to 5-0 and finished the five-match homestand successfully. The Broncos fell to 5-4 as the Bulldogs defended their home court convincingly.
"This was definitely our best performance of the year, so far," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "We keep on improving and I'm proud of the way our guys started out today's match with energy and aggressiveness. But our schedule doesn't get any easier from here."
Fresno State opened the day with solid performances from everyone, sweeping all three matches to win the doubles point. Seniors Sam Gibbs and Sergiu Modoc improved to 5-0 together as Gibbs made some tremendous shots to give the duo a dominating 8-3 victory.
"Sam Gibbs came out on fire in doubles," said Udwadia. "And despite a few injuries, we've still been able to play well."
In singles, Modoc won the clinching match for the third consecutive time, beating Brian Brogan of Santa Clara 6-2, 6-3. Junior Jakub Cech made quick work of the Broncos' Jan Macek to stay a perfect 4-0 on the season. Sophomore Sam Tadevosian bounced back from a tough loss on Friday to win today's match 6-2, 6-3. Junior Charles Irie outlasted Kevin McQuaid 6-3, 6-7 (3), (10-4), on the way to his fourth victory of the dual match season.
The Bulldogs play one match this upcoming week when they travel to Berkley to face 17th-ranked Cal. The Bears will host Fresno State on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 1 pm.
