THE WEEK AHEAD
The Bulldogs return home for the first time in two weeks to host the first of their last three home duals of the year. The Cal Poly Mustangs visit the North Gym on Tuesday, February 7 as the Bulldogs attempt to return to their winning ways after winning three of their first five duals. Cal Poly is currently ranked No. 20, and has moved in and out of the team rankings through the year. Fresno State then travels to take on another ranked opponent in Arizona State. The Bulldogs tied the Sun Devils last season in Fresno, but the No. 11 Sun Devils will pose a tough test for the banged-up `Dogs. The match will be held in Glendale at a seperately sponsored tournament rather than on the Arizona State campus in Tempe per a prior agreement between the coaches.
ALL-CALIFORNIA TOURNEY TIME
Fresno State got their first taste of a tournament format since December this past weekend, and took advantage of it, finishing second at the California Collegiate Invitational. The Bulldogs' Greg Gifford and Cody Parker each won individual titles, and Fresno State placed eight wrestlers in the tournament. The Bulldogs also swept the individual awards. Heavyweight Cody Parker was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, winning three straight matches including a fall of Eric Parker in the championship match. Garrett Spooner also picked up the Coach Hadder Award for most pins in the shortest time, making quick work of the wrestleback bracket after a close loss in the first round, making three pinfalls in 9:40 to win the award.
FOR FOUR
Fresno State finished its busiest week of the dual season, wrestling four duals in four locations this past week, dropping all four but showing different wrestlers stepping up in each match, covering for the continued troubles the Bulldogs are having in putting together a complete lineup. Fresno State started the week at home, losing a 28-18 dual, a match that the Bulldogs would have won 12-10 ignoring forfeits. In the rest of the week, Fresno State reshuffled the linuep in three duals in Oregon, moving to two forfeits for the team, with Sean Carlson and Darrell Goodpaster picking up wins against Oregon, and Greg Gifford winning a major decision against Oregon State. Fresno State had their closest call to date in the Saturday nightcap against Portland State. Fresno State picked up five bonus point wins against the Vikings, including a pin from Cory Borges, but forfeits at 165 and 174 continued to dog the team, allowing Portland State to sneak away with a 24-23 win.
