Bulldog Update
The state's premier track and field athletes arrive at Warmerdam Field this weekend, as Fresno State hosts the 2006 Cal-Nevada Championships for the second straight season. Last year, the Bulldog men's team tallied 146.5 points for a runner-up finish behind champion Cal State Northridge at 157 points. Coming off a dual-meet victory at Mt. San Antonio College last weekend, Fresno State appears primed to continue its early-season success.
MEN'S TEAM
A Look Back: 2005 Cal-Nevada Championships
Fresno State recorded 146.5 points for a runner-up finish behind champion Cal State Northridge at 157 points. Chris Berrian was selected Outstanding Track Performer for the two-day event after claiming titles in the 100- and 200-meter races. Berrian also ran the third leg of the first-place 4x100-meter relay squad, which clocked in at 40.41 to qualify for NCAA Regionals. Kenny Moon finished second overall in the 400-meter run, crossing the line with a personal-best 47.78. Ryan Moore captured the title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.41. Russell Weaver reached 16-6.75 (5.05m) to win the pole vault. Dave Endler bettered his NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the discus with a toss of 173-5 (52.86m) while DeAnte' Brown notched a personal-best 49-1.50 (14.97m) in the triple jump.
`Dogs Sweep Dual At Mt. San Antonio College
Fresno State completed a dual meet sweep of host Mt. San Antonio College, winning convincingly on both the men's and women's sides on Mar. 24 at Walnut, Calif. The Bulldog men claimed a 123-68 victory while the women earned a 128-55 win. Fresno State claimed a first-place finish in all but five meet events (three on the men's side and two among the women). Two Fresno State athletes reached NCAA Regional qualifying standards. Adam Andresen notched a career-best mark of 5.05m to take first in the pole vault, equaling the NCAA mark. Brian Vazquez eclipsed the postseason bar when he threw 185-1 in the hammer. Jesse Smith recorded two first-place finishes (100- and 200-meters) while the Bulldog 4x100 and 4x400-m relay teams placed first.
Strong Outings Highlight Cal Poly Invitational
Fresno State's track and field squad turned in a strong outing on both the men's and women's sides on Mar. 18 at the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo. The Bulldogs posted three first-place performances. Jesse Smith ran a season-best 10.85 in the 100-meters to take first while De'Ante Brown leaped 22-11 (6.99m) in the long jump to claim the event title. The Bulldog's 4x100-meter relay squad checked in at 42.34.
`Dogs Deadlocked With Chico State
Fresno State wrapped up an impressive afternoon at the Chico Wildcat Relays on Mar. 11, finishing in a first-place tie with host Chico State. The Bulldogs held off a late surge by Chico State as both clubs recorded 166 points. Cal State Stanislaus was third with 62 points. The Bulldogs were once again led by Ryan Moore, who posted the top time in the 400-meter hurdles at 53.37 and was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that took first at 3:17.60.
WOMEN'S TEAM
A Look Back: 2005 Cal-Nevada Championships
The Fresno State women's track and field squad registered 125.5 points, edging out Cal State Northridge and UNLV (both at 123) for the team title at the 2005 Cal-Nevada Championships. The `Dogs recorded only four first-place finishes in the competition but displayed their depth as multiple athletes were contributing scorers in almost every event. Andrea Buckner earned first-place honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:39.21) and 5000-meters (17:20.49). Zinzi Evans ran a 2:10.14 in the 800-meters to claim the crown in that race while Katie Christianson leaped to 19-3.50 (5.88m) in the long jump to capture the title. Lexine Lesser reached 12-5.50 (3.80m) in the pole vault, good for a second place while Annie Malaythong (11-8/3.56m) tied for fifth.
`Dogs Sweep Dual At Mt. San Antonio College
Fresno State completed a dual meet sweep of host Mt. San Antonio College, winning convincingly on both the men's and women's sides on Mar. 24 at Walnut, Calif. The Bulldog women picked up a 128-55 victory and claimed a first-place finish in all but five meet events (two on the women's side). Mallory Webb threw a career-high 51.48m in the javelin, nearly surpassing the school record of 52.62m. Two other Bulldog throwers established personal-bests, as La'Sha Hill won the shot put with a mark of 49-2 and Jamie Farley took the title in the hammer throw at 176-4. Zinzi Evans and Christina Lopez each registered two first-place finishes among the sprints.
Pagel Named To World Indoor Championships Staff
Fresno State assistant track and field coach Ramona Pagel was named to the Team USA coaching staff for the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia. Pagel, who works specifically with the men's and women's throws as a member of the Bulldog coaching staff, served in that same capacity for Team USA on the women's side when the World Indoor Championships took place earlier this month at the Olimpiyskiy Sport Palace Complex.
Women's Indoor Track Places Ninth At WAC Championships
Fresno State totaled 30 points and placed ninth overall at the 2006 WAC Indoor Championships at Boise, Idaho. Louisiana Tech successfully defended its title, scoring 131 points to claim the championship. Runner-up Idaho notched 90 points, followed by Utah State in third with 78. Fresno State was without an event champion in the meet but registered two top-five finishes on the final day. Renee Winston crossed the line at a personal-best 57.14 in the finals of the 400-meters to take fifth overall. La'Sha Hill placed fifth in the shot put with a career-best toss of 47-3.75 (14.42m).
