Afternoon Update: Cal-Nevada Championships

Fresno, Calif. - Action continues at the first day of the Cal-Nevada Championships, as preliminary races and events are set through the remainder of the day at Warmerdam Field. The meet started out this morning with the men's hammer throw at 9:30, and will finish today's competition with the only finals set for Friday, the men's and women's 5000m.
Through seven events in the morning, Fresno State has sent five competitors to the final day of competition. Junior Renee Winston qualified for the finals with a 56.32 time in the 400-meter dash, setting a season high. Also qualifying out on the track was fellow junior Krystina Jackson who easily won her heat in the 100m hurdles. In the morning's throwing events, Katie Richardson had the second-highest mark in the discus behind Amy Haapanen of UCSB to move into the finals tomorrow. The Bulldogs also had two team members advance in the men's hammer throw, with Brian Vazquez and Dave Endler both making the cut out of the third flight, and Chris Witscher just missing out, finishing one spot below the qualifiers.
Top times and marks in the morning and early afternoon came from a variety of schools, with Cal State Fullerton leading the way. Kandace Wilson of Cal State Fullerton won her heat with a 54.88 in the 400m dash, San Diego State's Lisa Naucler had the top time in the 1500m run, and CS Fullerton's Dinah Clark finished with a 14.07 time in her heat of the 100m hurdles. In the men's track events, CS Fullerton's Jordan Horn led the first day of the 1500m run, and UCLA's Kevin Craddock had the top heat of the 110m hurdles.
Events continue throughout today, with field action concluding with the men's javelin, and the track events finishing with the finals of the 5000m.
