FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team won each of its matches in both singles and doubles, winning their seventh straight while blanking Utah State 7-0, Friday in Boise, Idaho. The Bulldogs improved to 11-7 overall as they meet Boise State on Saturday in a much anticipated conference dual match.
"The team is playing really well right now," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "We just need to keep on improving and we're looking forward to Saturday's match against Boise State."
The Bulldogs have been on a tear lately, winning their last seven matches that started with a win over Brown in the final day of the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala. The Bulldogs finished off a perfect five-match home stand last week, while only two regular season matches remain.
The `Dogs won all three matches in doubles and have won the doubles point in six of their last seven. Senior Jakub Cech and freshman Mirko Zapletal were dominant at the No. 1 spot, beating Ericsson and Tyden 8-2. Freshman Taylor Leiby and sophomore Rudolf Siwy defeated Schenk and Young 8-3, while senior Charles Irie and freshman Flavio Mollinedo beat Ballam and Banks 8-2.
In singles, Cech won his sixth straight match after defeating Oscar Ericsson in the super-tiebreaker. Cech has been solid over the last few weeks and is 8-1 in three set matches, 7-3 in tiebreakers and 1-0 in super-tiebreakers.
Siwy won his fifth straight, beating Hannes Schenk 6-3 6-3. Zapletal won in straight sets as well, beating Fernando Gallegos 7-6, 6-3.
Irie won his team-best 21st overall, beating Jonas Tyden 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Tejesvi Veerepalli got back on track with a straight set win over Mike Banks and Mollinedo beat Dantley Young 6-4, 6-4.
