FRESNO, Calif.- Bulldog Basketball returned to the Save Mart Center for a fun Wednesday evening previewing the 2008-09 season for the Red Wave at the Red and White Scrimmage / Skills Showcase.
"I think was great to combine the men and women to show the camaraderie between the two programs," head women's coach Adrian Wiggins said. "It was fun to do some different competitions and get the fans out to support the programs. This is where they really start that bond for home court advantage."
The night started with an introduction of both the men's and women's teams and coaching staffs before heading into a two ball competition, where four teams of two (one women's and one men's student-athlete) competed in 60 second segments to score as many points as possible.
In the finals, senior Bailey Amundsen and sophomore Nedeljko Golubovic torched the competition by draining a combined 57 points. Juniors Ashley Walker and Sylvester Seay also advanced to the finals, finishing as runners-up with 27 points.
"It is always nice to get out and create a connection with the fans with a closer look," Golubovic said. "We have some good shooters and this is a good beginning."
The next event starred Paul George, Mychal Ladd, Seay and Taja Edwards in the dunk demonstration. Each completed three dunks in their 60 second period highlighted by George's dunk over freshman Taylor Kelly, Ladd's two-hand windmill, Seay's huge air slam, and Edward's buzzer-beating dunk from a ball shot to the glass by Emma Andrews.
After some activities for fans, the women took the floor for their scrimmage with half the team in red and the other half in blue.
Joh-Teena Filipe, a junior transfer from Utah, led the "Red" team to a close 20-19 victory as she earned 9 points and a pair of steals. Junior Brittny Jones added five points for "Red." The "Blue" saw Andrews pace the offense with 9 points in the 15-minute scrimmage, followed by Amundsen's four.
The men made it double victory for "Red" as they also picked up a win, defeating "Blue" 28-19.
George stole the show for "Red" by leading all scorers on the night with 10 points. Senior guard Dwight O'Neil dropped in 7 more points for "Red."
"Blue's" sophomore center Brandon Webster led his team with 8 point, with two dunks. Golubovic chimed in 6 points and Seay delivered a strong on-court presence on his way to 5 points.
"Join the State - Fresno State"-The men's and women's basketball teams start their exhibition season next Wednesday, November 5 when cross-town Fresno Pacific visit to the Save Mart Center.
