Dogs Move Up in Hawaii

FRESNO, Calif. - After a solid first round that had the Bulldogs in eighth place, Fresno State's men's golf team attacked the Leilehua Golf Course in Hawaii on Thursday, posting a team score of 279, four shots better than their opening round. The Dogs are 14-under par for the tournament and tied with Cal for seventh place.

Auburn made the biggest move in this tough field, shooting a 273 today and leads the tournament at 25-under par. The Dogs are nipping at the heals of Arizona (-15), and San Diego State (-16) to get into the top five. Both of those teams were receiving votes in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
Fresno State stands three shots better than Arkansas and is five ahead of BYU heading into Friday's final round.
The Dogs are using a solid team approach, with two players at 4-under par and two at 3-under par.
Todd Angel and Michael Gideon are tied for 25th place at -4, shooting a 68 and 69, respectively today. Sophomore Grant Doverspike, the reigning WAC Player of the Week and the 2007 WAC medalist, was even par today to end his eighth consecutive round under par. He is currently at minus-3. Also at 3-under is Matt Ryan, who was 1-under par today.
Brad Wyatt bounced back after a tough first round in which he shot an 83, to go 11 strokes better with a 72 today. He stands at +11 for the tournament.
"We had a solid day shooting 9-under par" said head coach Mike Watney. "If we have a great round tomorrow we can pass several of those top teams. I am fairly satisfied with where we are at if we can finish strong."
Cal's Stephen Hale and San Diego State's Johan Carllson share the lead at 10-under par.
With 21 teams in the field, including No. 14 Auburn, Fresno State will help solidify it's chances for an NCAA berth.
The final round will be played Friday, beginning at 6 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
