FRESNO, Calif. - The 50th Annual Mt. SAC Relays proved to be a productive meet for the Fresno State track and field teams this weekend.
The event started off with a bang as Director of Track and Field, Bob Fraley, was inducted into the Mt. SAC Relays Hall of Fame Thursday.
Fraley's teams then proved why he is a continuing legend in track and field circles, as four more Bulldogs put up regionally qualifying marks over the weekend.
The women's 4x400m relay team of Renee Winston, Christina Lopez, Erica McCoy, and Tiera Hilliard, won the university open division at 3:41.20, qualifying for regionals. The 4x100m relay took fourth at 46.04 for fourth.
Sharon Ayala won the hammer throw with a toss of 203-4 (61.98m), breaking the Fresno State record for the third time this season.
Vanessa Sautebin earned a bid to the regional meet, running the exact time to qualify at 13.92 for a silver finish in the 100m hurdles. Rayna White put up a personal-best in the 100m dash at 11.97.
In the 1,500m run, Roxanne Sellick took the gold at 4:30.77. Marina Santana ran her second-consecutive personal-best in the 800m run with 2:11.59 for second in the meet and the WAC's top time. Meredith Hawkins placed fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase, timing in at 11:04.02.
Brooke Pighin threw for 43.93m in the javelin throw for sixth. Kayla Xavier's 13.66m shot put was good for fourth. Cara Montes cleared a personal-best 12-3.75 (3.75m) in the pole vault for fifth in the pole vault, just ahead of teammate Sarah Savage (3.60m) in sixth. Miles Shay leapt a personal-best of 11.65m in the triple jump to take fourth.
For the men, Val-Pierre Dai'Re championed the 110m hurdles with a personal-best of 14.24. Dai'Re became the second Bulldog this season to qualify two events for the regional meet, adding the 110m hurdles to the 400m hurdles.
Frank Sanders hit two regional qualifying marks with a second-place finish and personal-best of 1:50.08 in the 800m. He also won the 1,500m run with another personal best and regional-qualifying time of 3:50.42. Both of Sanders' times from the weekend lead the WAC.
Gary Lee won the long jump with a 24-8 (7.52m) leap. Oscar Rodriguez, the other Bulldog to have qualified two events, was the runner-up in the shot put, with a season-best mark of 57-4.25 (17.48m). Brian Vazquez out-did himself in the hammer throw with a personal-best of 207-8 (63.29m), taking fourth in the event.
