SACRAMENTO, Calif.- - The Fresno State baseball team was recognized on Thursday at the State Capitol for winning the 2008 NCAA baseball championship. Leading the ceremony was Senate Republican Leader Dave Cogdill and Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines, both representing Fresno.
Representing the Bulldogs for the ceremony was athletics director Thomas Boeh, senior associate athletic director Betsy Mosher, head coach Mike Batesole and pitcher Jason Breckley.
"The Fresno State Bulldogs should be proud of their storybook season. It is an honor to recognize the landmark achievements of this hard-working team," said Senate Republican Leader Dave Cogdill. "The Bulldogs steered their way past critics on the road to a historic championship. All season long, head coach Mike Batesole, his staff and players demonstrated a commitment to excellence and it paid off in a big way."
Fresno State is the lowest-seeded team to ever win an NCAA title. The team compiled an impressive 14-5 record during the postseason to win their first national championship. The Bulldogs defeated six teams ranked in the Top 20 in their run to the title.
This was the Bulldogs fourth trip to the College World Series and they have won three-straight WAC championships. Coach Batesole was tabbed as the National Coach of the Year by two different publications and Tommy Mendonca was named to the World Series MVP.
"As a Fresno State Bulldog, I am proud to join with my colleagues in honoring the Fresno State Bulldogs for winning the College World Series," said Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines. "Their championship inspired not only our community, but the entire country. The Bulldogs showed that with hard work and great determination, there is no such thing as impossible odds."
