Bulldogs Impressive in Home Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State made a resounding statement with a 6-1 win in its first dual match of the season against Cal Poly on Wednesday.
The match was the Bulldogs' home opener, and they wanted to set the tone for the match, and they did that by sweeping the doubles competition.
"I was pleased with the strong doubles play," Fresno State head coach Jay Udwadia said. "It gave us the momentum we needed for singles."
At the top doubles matchup, the Bulldogs' Rudolf Siwy and Mirko Zapletal got off to a hot start by going up 3-0, but their opponents, Andre Dome and Andrew Gerst battled back to make it a close match. But in the end, Siwy and Zapletal were able to put the Mustang duo away 8-6, to complete the sweep of doubles action.
Like their coach said, both Zapletal and Siwy used that momentum to carry over to singles. Zapletal put together an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sebastian Bell. And Siwy clinched the team victory with his 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Dome.
"Tennis matches in college are all about attitude and enthusiasm," Siwy said. "And my goal was for my team to experience this atmosphere, because we will need it thoughout the season."
Rikus de Villiers was victorious in his match after dropping his first set 7-5 to Gerst. But de Villiers came back and won the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 to win the match.
Remi Boutillier and Tejesvi Teerepalli also brought home wins in singles action for the Bulldogs.
