The Fresno State men's tennis team fought hard against a talented Washington Husky squad in a 5-2 loss on Sunday in Seattle.
Bulldogs Remi Boutillier and Tejesvi Veerepali picked up wins against the 41st-ranked Huskies. Boutillier knocked off the Huskies' Derek Drabble 6-3, 6-4, and Veerepali defeated David Chu 6-3, 6-0.
Fresno State's Rikus de Villiers and Mirko Zapletal were narrowly edged in matches that could have easily gone the Bulldogs' way. Zapletal took Washington's Patrik Fischer to a tiebreaker in a 6-4, 7-6(6) (10-4) loss. De Villiers battled hard but came up short in a 7-5, 6-4 defeat to Martin Kildahl.
"Washington played a solid match," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "It was a close one to the end. There were some opportunities we could have capitalized on throughout the match."
Fresno State will come back to the friendly confines of the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center for three matches in three days. The Bulldogs will first face San Diego State on Feb. 27, then Arizona on Feb. 28 and conclude with Middle Tennessee State on March 1.
