FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State collected its fourth victory over a ranked team this year, defeating No. 61 William & Mary, 4-1, on Friday at the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
The Bulldogs won the doubles point easily, and proceeded to win three singles matches in two sets on courts one, two and four to bring home the victory.
Fresno State's Remi Boutillier continued to thrive on court four. The freshman from Briancon, France, posted his second-straight win of the tournament, with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ilja Orre.
Junior Mirko Zapletal also dominated in his match against Marwan Ramadan, with a win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Some of the Bulldogs faced adversity early.
Senior Rudolf Siwy found himself down 2-4, but came back to win the first set, 7-5, then finished in straight sets with a 6-4 win in the second to clinch the match.
On court three, Rikus de Villiers dropped the first set, 6-4, but regained his focus with a 7-5 win in the second set, just before the match was clinched and the remaining matches were called.
"It's nice to get a win over a tough team like William & Mary," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "I was glad to see Rikus and Rudy fight back after being down early. Rudy did a great job clinching the match for us."
In doubles action Boutillier and de Villiers proved to be a deadly combination again, winning out over Varun Pandit and Ben Wirth, 8-2. Tejesvi Veerepalli and Taylor Leiby clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 victory over Dominic Pagon and Marwan Ramadan.
The Bulldogs will face No. 55 Penn State tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the next round of the tournament.
