FRESNO, Calif. - Matt Bushnell opened the California Multi's with a bang.
Bushnell concluded the first day of the decathlon in Davis, Calif., leading all collegiate competitors with 3,641 points. Bushnell and teammate Evan Young participated in five events on the first of the two-day competition.
"This was a very good first day for us," said head coach Scott Winsor.
Both Bushnell and Young started on a strong note, finishing among the Top 3 in the 100-meter race. The two Bulldogs each timed an 11.13-second finish, a personal-best for both.
The long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 followed in succession. Bushnell, a sophomore, took second in the shot put with a personal-best of 41 feet, 1.5 inches (12.53 meters), set another PR in the long jump and won the quarter-mile race.
Bushnell finished the day leading the collegiate competitors, while Young is in striking distance in seventh among the same group.
Thursday opens with the sixth event, the 110 hurdles.
