FRESNO, Calif. - Matt Bushnell made a statement in the decathlon at the UC Davis Multis Thursday.
Bushnell finished first among collegiate competitors and second overall at the first all-around competition of the season. Teammate Evan Young finished in fifth among the his college colleagues, seventh among the 14 athletes competing.
"This is very, very encouraging for both of them," said head coach Scott Winsor. "We had good results, and what's even better is we know there is a lot more in the tank for both of them."
Bushnell scored 6,828 points throughout the ten events in Davis, Calif., a new personal-best. Young, a redshirt senior, amassed 6,224 points in his first decathlon competition since 2007.
Bushnell had a dramatic day of personal-bests, improving his own PRs in four of five events and finishing among the Top 3 in three of those events.
The day's first event, the 110-meter hurdles, Bushnell ran a time of 15.88 seconds, a new personal-best. He marked a new personal-best in the discus, the second event of the day, with a toss of 120 feet, 2 inches (36.64 meters) to take third. Bushnell cleared 14-03.25 (4.35m) in the pole vault for third and a new personal-best. The day's final event, the 1,500, resulted in Bushnell's fourth personal-best of the day. He timed a 4:54.20, a more than 20-second improvement over his best set last season.
Young finished in the Top 5 in the four of the events on the day.
"The great thing about this meet and the decathlon is that you can look at specific events, for both of these guys, and pinpoint where you can improve," said Winsor. "It's very exciting to know there's more in the tank for both of them."
The Bulldogs continue with March Madness with two more meets this weekend. The distance corps travels to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., while the rest of the squad travels south for the Cal-Nevada Championships in Los Angeles over the weekend.
