Meet the Bulldogs: Alexis Lujan

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs conclude regular season play at Bulldog Diamond this weekend, as the `Dogs host Nevada tonight on Bulldog Softball History/Ice Cream Night. Alexis Lujan is one of eight newcomers to the 2009 team and sat down with www.gobulldogs.com to talk about the season.
Lujan played at Bullard High School along with current Bulldogs Ryane Petersen and Angelica Adam. She has played mostly at the designated player position this season and last week at Louisiana Tech, started all three games in left field. Lujan has two home runs on the season, including a grand slam at New Mexico State.
How did you get started playing softball?
"I started when I was five. My dad took me out to the field and I've been playing ever since."
How has the transition been from high school to college?
"It's a lot harder but I think I have transitioned very well. It's a lot more competitive and that's what I like about it."
What do you hope to accomplish in your four years at Fresno State?
"I want to get a good education and to go to the Women's College World Series."
Who was your most influential role model growing up?
"My dad. He has been playing (baseball) ever since he was young and he just kept me going in softball."
Why did you choose Fresno State?
"I've always wanted to play for Coach Wright and I always wanted to be a Bulldog ever since I was little. Plus it's my home town!"
What is your favorite Coach Wright quote?
"You've got to have heart."
It's Senior Night this Saturday at Bulldog Diamond. What can you tell us about Haley and Mallory Perkins?
"They are both great girls and awesome players and I am going to miss them a lot."
You played softball in high school with Ryane and Angelica, what was it like to play with them in high school what is it like now to play with them in college?
"It's great. In high school we got along really well. Ryane and I have been playing together since we were in third grade, against each other and with each other and even with Angelica coming on it feels great to have people there that you have been playing with for so long."
What do you want fans to know about this team heading into the WAC Tournament?
"That we are going to be the team to beat!"
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The `Dogs return for the last WAC home series as they host Nevada April 17-18. The `Dogs and Wolf Pack play Friday night at 6 pm and close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon starting at 1 pm. Friday is Softball History Night and former softball student-athletes will be on hand to sign autographs. Every fan will also receive FREE ice cream. Saturday is Senior Day as the softball seniors are honored for their dedication to Fresno State softball.
