FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs finished the Brutus Hamilton in similar fashion as the way they started it; setting new personal-bests and winning events.
Fresno State student-athletes won two events and broke four personal records in the final invitational of the regular season.
DeAnte Brown out-leapt the competition in the triple jump, winning the "hop, skip and a jump" with a career-best Saturday. Brown marked a career-best 50 feet, 2 inches (15.29 meters), besting the second-place finisher by nearly three inches, bettering his NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Brown also picked up fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22-8 (6.91m).
"DeAnte got the job done today," said head coach Scott Winsor. "He's jumping well, not over thinking it."
Kayla Xavier became a triple-threat Saturday, qualifying her third event for the NCAA Regional - the discus. Xavier tossed a career-best of 162 feet, 2 inches (49.44 meters), beating her own personal-best by more than eight feet for fourth place.
Kayla is a three-event regional qualifier and that's phenomenal," said Winsor. "She has worked very hard and deserves it."
Tim Greene added to the Bulldog's top performances in the discus as well. On his final throw of the day, Greene picked up fourth with a toss of 158-2 (48.20m)
In the shot put, Justin Cutler threw 48-0.5 (14.64) to take third. Xavier took third in the women's shot put, throwing 46-1.50 (14.06m).
On the track, the relay teams shined. The women's 4x400 team of Vanessa Sautebin, Tiera Hilliard, Janev Morris and Latrisha Jordan, won the race with a time of 3:47.58, while the men's squad of Val-Pierre Dai'Re, Myster Holliman, Matt Bushnell and Michael Barragan finished in fourth at 3:15.07. Jordan, Shanelle Stephens, Hilliard and Morris combined for the 4x100, overcoming their early season-best with a 46.91 for fourth.
Dai'Re took second, timing a season-best 14.31, in the 110 hurdles. The time was just .01 seconds off the NCAA Regional qualifying standard. In addition to the relay, Barragan also added a fifth place finish in the 400, an event he ran in for the first time this season.
In the 100 hurdles, Sautebin earned a third place finish with a time of 14.13. Roxanne Sellick grabbed another third place finish for Fresno State, earning the bronze in the 1,500 at 4:31.75. Hilliard placed fourth in the 400, running a season-best 55.28 for the quarter mile.
As a whole it's been a successful year thus far," Winsor said. "We still have a lot of season left. We have that dual meet, then conference and then come the big ones with NCAA Regional and then the NCAA Championships."
The meet was the final invitational of the regular season for the Bulldogs, who will host a dual against Cal Poly on May 2.
