FRESNO, Calif. - Corcoran High School standout Demi Walker is the newest addition to the Bulldog softball team, head coach Margie Wright announced today.
Walker, a 2010 Fresno Bee All-Star First Team honoree, joined the team this fall and will compete for the Dogs in the upcoming 2011 season.
"Demi is an extremely versatile young athlete," Wright said. "She has got a lot of talent and much of it is untapped. I think she will be a great player in our program."
Walker finished her prep career as the Central Section's career home run leader with 32 during four varsity seasons. As a senior, she earned her second East Sequoia League Most Valuable Player honor. In her final season, she hit .605 (46-76) with nine home runs and 39 RBIs for the ESL champion. As a freshman, Walker set the Central Section single-season home run record with 10.
Wright praised Walker's strong work ethic and excellence in the classroom as key attributes for the team's success.
"She is a very good student, which will make her a great student on the field," Wright also noted of Walker. "Demi is willing to try anything on the field to get better. She doesn't like to lose and brings a positive attitude to our team."
Walker also garnered high marks from her coach at Corcoran.
"She's one of the best players in the Valley," David Chavez told the Fresno Bee. "She knows how to hit the ball, and she's quick too. She just doesn't slow down."
Walker joins Brooke Ortiz, Vonnie Martin and Rebecca Hall to complete the roster for the 2011 season.
Fresno State returns to competition on the diamond in February to start their run for a 30th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
