FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs jumped out of the blocks Friday, beginning the indoor track and field season with the fourth annual Run for the Dream at the Save Mart Center. Fresno State competed against USC, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Stanislaus, and Cal Poly among others.
Rosario Sanchez and Roxanne Sellick led the Bulldogs on the field and on the track, respectively. Each "RS" picked up wins in their signature events.
"We had some really good performances today," said director of track and field Scott Winsor. "It is really great to be back in season."
Sanchez headlined the Fresno State field performances picking up a first- and second -place in the throwing events Saturday. Sanchez, a redshirt sophomore, came back with full force to win the shot put and nab silver in the weight throw. In the shot put, Sanchez marked a toss of 49 feet and 1 inch (14.96 meters) on her third throw of the day. That throw is the second-best mark in the WAC this season.
"It's good to have Rosario back," said Winsor. "She is an important part of the success of our team. She did a great job today, really stepped up for us."
In her other event, Sanchez threw the 20-pound weight 53-10.5 (16.42m) to take second to former teammate Sharon Ayala. Current Bulldog Nancy Vizcarra rounded out the top three finishers with a throw of 53-2.25 (16.21m).
Cara Montes finished among in the top five performers in the pole vault, clearing a 10-11.75 (3.35m) to place fourth.
Over the on track, Sellick continued her dominance of the 1 mile run at the Run for the Dream. Sellick won the race for the third-consecutive year, having won each year since 2008. This time, Sellick won the event with a time of 4:59.46, more than ten seconds better than the second place finisher.
"Roxanne did a good job, really had a great run in the first race of the year," said distance coach Sean McManus. "We talked beforehand about being relaxed and letting someone else lead. She had a great race."
Vanessa Sautebin also nabbed a top three finish on the short track. The senior placed third in the 55-meter hurdles, timing in at 8.29 for a personal-best at that distance. Shanelle Stephens also found her stride on 55-meter track minus the hurdles. Stephens ran a 7.17, a career best, to pick up third in the event.
In the women's distance medley, Stevie Brumwell, Megan de la Torre, Jenna Rogers and Pamela Cruz combined for a second place finish. The four clocked in at 13:24.05 just behind the team from Cal State Los Angeles.
This was the fourth year of Run for the Dream and third on the Fred and Madeline Arnold Track. A donation by Fred Arnold made the new track a reality.
The Run for the Dream continues Saturday with youth and high school divisions.
