`Dogs Cruise Against Lobos

FRESNO, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked Fresno State men's tennis team made it three-straight wins over Mountain West Conference opponents, by knocking off defending conference champion New Mexico, 6-1, on Sunday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs came into the meeting with a two-match winning streak, by defeating the Lobos' conference mates UNLV and San Diego State.
Against New Mexico, the `Dogs started the match with a statement, by sweeping the doubles point.
No. 24 Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier defeated Phil Anderson and Jadon Phillips, 8-6. No. 44 Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby set aside Joe Wood and Carl Ho, 8-5. Tejesvi Veerepalli and Siddharth Alapati picked up an 8-3 victory over Ben Dunbar and Conor Berg.
"We had the momentum with us heading into singles and that was a big advantage," Veerepalli said.
Alapati put the Bulldogs up 2-0, with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wood.
Senior Mirko Zapletal clinched the match for Fresno State, with his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Dunbar on Court 1.
David Ayoun, Veerepalli and de Villiers each picked up singles victories on the afternoon.
"The team did a great job competing today and we are happy with the result," Fresno State head coach Jay Udwadia said.
Fresno State improved its record to 10-5 on the year.
The `Dogs will next be in action at the prestigious Blue-Gray Tennis Classic on March 18-21 in Montgomery, Ala. The Blue-Gray is a three-day, dual match-format tournament, featuring 16 of the top teams in the country. The tournament draw will be announced on March 17 on www.bluegraytennis.com.
