Fresno State Dazzles at USC Invite

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State took on the USC Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif., in the team's first invitational of the season. The Bulldogs nabbed 23 Top 10 finishes alongside multiple season-best marks at USC Loker Stadium and Cromwell Field.
"We had really solid performances across the board today," said Director of Track and Field Scott Winsor. "The first thing we look for is personal bests and then we look for consistency around those marks. We have showed great consistency over the last few weeks with people going out and competing around their PRs."
Fresno State made a splash in the 1,500 meter run capturing three of the Top 10 spots all with season-best times. Defending WAC Champion Frank Sanders led the charge, taking third among the 36 competitors with a season-best time of 3:48.35. Eric Battles finished in fifth at a time of 3:54.65. Cody Alves rounded out the trio, clocking a career-best 4:00.30.
Sanders also grabbed a sixth place finish in the 42-man 800 race to time in at 1:53.20.
Freshman Cameron Parker sprinted to a ninth place finish in the 100, timing in at 10.87. The 4x400 relay team of Michael Barragan, Myster Holliman, Kendrick Young and Jordan Walker combined for a fifth place finish in the event and the season's best mark of 3:17.43.
Young took second among the 21 racers in the 400 hurdles. Holliman also finished among the Top 10, finishing in seventh with a mark of 53.70.
Tim Greene led the men on the field, scoring a second place finish with a hammer throw of 192-0.25 (58.53m). Teammate Raul Gonzales finished seventh in the event 165-11.25 (50.58m). Green also took eighth in the discus throw, marking a 157-11.75 (48.15m).
Freshman Kory Stephens had another solid week in the javelin, marking a fifth place finish with a throw of 180-10.5 (55.13m).
The Bulldogs had strong showings in the secondary divisions of events as well. Andre McCullouch leapt to sixth in the high jump with a career-best 6-2 (1.88m) in the high jump. David Deal's 20-6 (6.25m) in the long jump earned him fifth on the day. Andrew Mashler cleared 14-1.25 (4.30m) for second in the pole vault.
J'Quyra Moncur-Blue led the women Saturday, making a huge statement in the throwing events Saturday. The freshman tossed the hammer 184-1.50 (56.12m) to take second and move into fourth in the Fresno State record books. She also took fifth in the second division of shot put, marking a 41-1.75 (12.54m).
In the first division of shot put, Rosario Sanchez took second with her season-best mark of 49-1.25 (14.97m).
Jacqueline Vazquez threw a season-best in the javelin with a 134-3 (40.92m) for ninth. Christina Cabias had a third place finish in the second division of the javelin with a 120-1.25 (36.61m)
Tiffani Boone cleared 5-1 (1.55m) in the high jump to grab eighth in the second division of the high jump.
Over on the track in the women's events, Roxanne Sellick ran in the 800 for the first time this season, taking sixth among the 36 competitors with a time of 2:15.62.
Shanelle Stephens marked a season-best 12:34 in the 100 and placed ninth among the 35 racers.
Fresno State's multi-event competitors have less than a week before their next event. The decathletes and pentathletes will head to Berkeley, Calif., for the UC Multi's Meet March 24-25.
