FRESNO, Calif. - David Deal took on some of the best decathletes in the nation on Day 1 of the Cal Multis in Berkeley, Calif.
After day one, Deal, the Bulldog's lone competitor, sits in ninth place going into the second day. Deal competed in the 100-, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump and the 400-meter to complete the first day's event.
"David started off well today," said track and field head coach Scott Winsor. "His two weaker events are back-to-back on the first day, but he ended the day well in the 400."
Deal timed a career-best in the first day's final event, the 400-meter. The junior finished third in the event with a time of 50.73.
"Tomorrow is David's strong day," said Winsor. "His two best events are the pole vault and the javelin, so he should climb the ladder on his second day."
Deal scored 3,267 points on the first day. His career-best over the two-day event was 6,481 at the WAC Championships in 2008.
