FRESNO, Calif. - David Deal closed out the Cal Multis with career bests including in total points scored.
Deal earned 6,521 points over the two-day event, bettering his former best by 40 points to finish in ninth among the elite competition, seventh among collegiate athletes.
"David did a great job today," said head coach Scott Winsor. "He came back and had a strong second day, finishing with a PR after a tough first day. And that's a really good thing. It shows how much potential he has going in to the rest of the season."
The junior also marked new personal bests in the discus, pole vault and the 1,500 meter run.
Deal won the pole vault competition, clearing a career-best 15-5 (4.70m). The vault improves Deal's PR by four inches and marks the Bulldog's team best. In the discus, he threw a 108-8 (33.12m) to improve his by more than a foot. Deal ended the day with a huge personal best in the 1,500. He ran a 4:55.33, knocking 13 seconds off his former best in the event.
"What we take from the competition is how far ahead of schedule David is compared to last year," said Winsor. "He got sick just before this meet last year and that took him out of the entire season. So to come back and have a PR the first time out is a great thing for him."
Competition continues for Fresno State track and field on Saturday as the team travels to Los Angeles for the Cal-Nevada Championships over the weekend at UCLA.
